Under the leadership of Hugo Edward Juarez, preparations for the International Cultures Celebration began in the early 1980s, culminating in the inaugural event for the centennial of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. This marked the first time in US history that a single event brought together grassroots multicultural communities representing the diverse cultural tapestry of the U.S.A.

From the early 1980s, the International Cultures Celebration started its development by reaching out to bring together the leadership of the many different cultural communities that are part of the NYC metro area. This call for unity by Mr. Hugo Edward Juarez was embraced by the leadership who became the founding members of the Celebration.

On October 28th, 1986, despite the cold and stormy weather with pouring rain, the first International Cultures Parade experience took place. Tens of thousands of parade participants representing over 50 nations from South America to the northern Himalayas defied the inclement weather, arrived, and showcased their culture. It was a historic moment where geopolitics took a backseat. For the first time in history, Chinese from mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong participated with their respective delegations. Similarly, Greeks, Turks, Cypriots, and Macedonians, as well as Hindus, Pakistanis, Sikhs, and many others, set aside their political and religious beliefs. It was a colorful display of New Americans coming together proudly raising our US and their national flags, showcasing Harmony in Diversity. Thereafter, the ‘Presentation of Nation’s Flags’ and ‘Passport to the World Expo-Fest’ were integrated into the week’s celebration.
